Hiking The Red Canyon

I recently went on a diving trip of the Red Sea, and that’s how I came across the the Eilat Mountains in Southern Israel. I didn’t really know much about the mountains, and I have to admit it was a breathtaking experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the outdoors and wants to break away from the tourists and the crowds.

Definitely check out the the city of Eilat before heading out. The city has a lot of quaint restaurants and historical sites, as well as some spectacular views of the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea. If diving is not your thing, then one of the places you have to stop by is the Underwater Observatory Park (coralworld.co.il). The observatory lets you step into the Red Sea without having to get wet 🙂

Once you’ve had your fill of the city and it sights, head out to the mountains so you can make your way to the Red Canyon. The canyon is easily accessible from Eilat – you can take the Egged bus 15 for only 4 or 5 shekel. The hike itself is a treat in itself, and getting to the Red Canyon is just icing on the cake.

However, I would recommend you at least plan your trip a little before heading out.

I have hiked the world over, and looking out, I thought “you know, this is just going to be a walk in the park”. I was a little bit wrong.

So first things first, I would recommend you take a good pair of boots.

These are awesome. Not really boots, but they provide you all the protection from a top-notch boot, but with the added comfort of tennis shoes.

Second, water. Please take plenty of water. I am not a proponent of gatorade and the likes. For hikes like these, plain old water will do. Plus, and I kid you not, the water from Eilat just seems to refresh you better than any of those drinks. If you need a place to start, check out this nifty camelbak.

Plenty of water and room for maybe another bottle, your wallet, phone, keys, and some snacks.

Talking about snacks, please be conscientious about what you put in your body. My preference is always a couple of homemade sandwiches. But since that can be a little tricky when touristing, try for some high protein snacks that can keep you full.

Disclaimer: I don’t sell anything through Amazon, so these are just suggestions for gear I’ve found that I feel is good quality and affordable.

And that’s it. Enjoy your hike.
